As with Office generally, Word is less about adding new features and more about making it easier to use existing features, especially those that more casual users like myself may not have been aware of at all and Word does this.

Word cleans-up what was already in place and adds a few new things Powerpoint is where I noticed the biggest changes. Powerpoint is the program I use second most, as I do training presentations on a relatively frequent basis. Powerpoint is the one program in office that I always wish would do just a little bit more than what it seems capable of so I notice upgrades to this program more.

The biggest issues I have had with powerpoints capabilities in the last few years relate to how I often feel that it should be easier than it is to integrate multi-media files with a presentation and to scynchronize the multi-media aspects with the slides Powerpoint hasn’t solved this problem, but at least it’s going in the right direction.

It’s a lot easier to use sound and video files in than in earlier versions. Also, the increased ease of use of powerpoint is very evident from being able to make major changes with a single click and to preview changes before they are made. I don’t have much to say about Excel , as I tend to use it a lot less. The one thing that does confuse me about this program is why, of all programs, Outlook is excluded from the basic package I think most people would not be motivated to go up to the next price step just to get outlook.

The 4, rather than 5, stars mostly reflect the fact that I think Outlook should have been included and that powerpoint multimedia integration still has a way to go. I really have nothing against the product, except that it takes too long to open because each time I open Word, it it has to include “add-ins” and bluetooth”, etc. It just opened. I still miss the ability to create type-in forms in Word. I am glad that at least they kept most of the editing options from I’m still trying to learn them all.

There is one thing I do like about the new product and that is the ability to open any recently opened document from within the document. My problem is the expense of trying to keep up with Microsoft and all their new products which create more problems with other products. So far, I haven’t really found any issues with Office that I am aware of thus far because I haven’t really used anything except Word. I haven’t yet created any new spreadsheets, although it appears to work fine with my older Excel Documents.

I would have liked to get the full version but it just costs too much. I would like to have Publisher, Powerpoint and the other apps on the professional version, but the cost is just prohibitive. I also added Windows 7 at the same time and now my IE 8 won’t work because I have a bit OS and computer and Adobe Flash won’t work with bit systems, so I had to also add Foxfire in order to update Adobe to make it interoperable with other websites.

Trying to get everything to work together is a big problem. That’s why I have no issues with the “monopoly” of Microsoft. At least the parts work together, most of the time. When it was forced to break up, the communications network was broken for many years before some forms of compliance forced systems to work together.

It was never as reliable as when all the parts came from the same company, but at least it has sort of settled down these days. Maybe someday software will reach that stage. One can only hope. Microsoft Office has always been burdened with “feature creep”, whereby each new version contains features that many users did not want or need. I’m not a “cloud” or “collaborative” guy — I just want a useful stand-alone product that won’t get in my way for word-processing, spreadsheets, etc.

This version of Office accomplishes those ends, but I think that the buck is about to stop here. Of course, if you’re “upgrading” from much earlier versions of Microsoft Office, there will be a big learning curve with Office a huge nuisance if your needs are fairly simple, for you’ll have to learn brand-new ways of accomplishing the same tasks that you formerly did with ease.

But if you already know about the infamous “ribbon” and such things, you won’t have much trouble. The three-license pack of MS Office has been steadily rising in price. I’m not sure why there is a run on this version, but perhaps it reflects disenchantment with the “new and improved” alternatives that came after it. If you just need a single copy of Office instead of the 3-license key product that I’m reviewing here , you can currently find a downloadable version on Amazon for under 90 bucks.

These took an age and a half to complete and then I needed to install MS Office I received excellent help and encouragement all the way through this process and when I was finally ‘done’ after When loading the supplied Product Key onto my computer a window appeared stating I had potentially been the victim of pirated software and when trying and failing to uninstall the provided Office Home and Student DVD download my computer kept advising “Microsoft cannot verify the license for this application and will now shutdown”.

I was then forced to contact Microsoft Tech Support who advised me that this package had corrupted my computer and it took nearly an hour for them to remove the corrupted files off my machine.
